Demurrage
A charge for leaving a container inside the terminal beyond its free time.
Demurrage runs while the container is still in the port. It is the terminal's charge for the space. It starts the moment your free time ends, which is usually three to seven days at destination.
It is often caused by paperwork rather than transport: a late filing, an original bill of lading still in the post, or a certificate waiting to be legalised. The clock does not stop because the delay was not your fault.
