Detention
A charge for keeping a container after taking it out of the terminal, until you return it empty.
Detention starts when demurrage stops. Once the container leaves the port, you are holding the carrier's equipment. The charge runs until the container comes back empty.
The difference matters because the two are billed separately and at different rates. A delay in unloading adds to detention. A delay in customs clearance adds to demurrage.
